William of Nassau, was born to Protestant parents in Germany in 1533. He became a favorite of Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, and was reared a Catholic at the emperor's insistence. A skilled diplomat, William was made overseer of the Netherlands at that time under Spanish dominion. When Spain encroached on Dutch liberties, however, William joined the legendary group of rebels known as the Beggars, contemptuously named by a Spanish official, and fought the imperial forces to a standstill.
