Item #8078
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JUAN COY, Outlaw and Lawman
Author: Charles L. Olmstead
Price: $21.95
Shipping: $3.75
Charles L. Olmstead and Edward Coy Ybarra. Some American West outlaws became eminent lawmen in later years using their past experience to fight crime and regain a proper place in society. One such person in the 1880s and 1890s in South Texas was Juan Coy, a member of a prominent family, whose fascinating life in a turbulent reconstruction frontier has been plucked from historical obscurity by the authors. By his own account Coy gunned down at least thirty-three opponents making this dubious honor equal to that of any Wild West gunslinger. One event highlighted is a shootout more explosive than the gunfight at the O.K Corral in a town that no longer exists. Written in dramatic novelistic style. Interesting sidelight is the friendship of the Coy and Butler families who assisted the newly-arrived Polish settlers of the area. Austin, 2000 1st Ed., 176 Pgs, PB.

EL MESQUITE, A Story of the Spanish Settlements Between the Nueces and the Rio Grande
Author: Elena Zamora O'Shea
Price: $26.95

With new introductions by Andrés Tijerina & Leticia M. Garza-Falcón. Originally published in 1935 by Mathis Publishing Company in Dallas. Many of the settlers who lived in the Nueces Strip had Hispanic names that until very recently were omitted from the pages of Texas history. Mrs.O'Shea, a descendant of one of the original land-grant families in the region found an ingeniuos way to publish the history of her region and her people at a time when neither Tejanos nor women had much voice. She told the story from the perspective of an ancient mesquite tree, under whose branches much South Texas history hasd passed. Through the voice of the old knarled tree she tells of South Texas political and ehtnographic history filled with colorful details of daily life such as songs, local plants and folk medicines, foods and recipes, peone/patron relations and the distinctive Tejano ranch vocabulary. College Station, TX 2000 University of Texas Press 2nd Ed. 66 Pages, Introductions and 80 Pgs Text, 5&3/4 x 7&3/4,HB.
