BARBAROS, Spaniards and their Savages in the Age of Enlightenment
Author: David J. Weber
Price: $40.00
Shipping: $3.75
Two centuries after Cortes and Pizarro seized the Aztec and Inca Empires, Spain's conquest of America remained unfinished. Indians retained control over most of Spain's American empire. Mounted on horseback, savvy about European ways, and often possessing firearms, Independent Indians continued to find new ways to resist subjugation by Spanish soldiers and conversion by Spanish missionaries. In a panoramic study Weber explains how late eighteenth-century Spanish administrators tried to fashion a more enlightened policy toward the people they called bárbaros or savages.
Weber states that power more than the power of ideas, determined how Spaniards treated "savages" in the Age of Enlightmenment. Illustrated. New Haven 2005 Yale University Press 1st Ed., 466 Pgs., 7 x 10, HB.

THE WRECK OF THE BELLE, THE RUIN OF LA SALLE
Author: Robert S. Weddle
Price: $29.95
Shipping: $3.75
A more accurate picture of La Salle emerges as a result of the author’s exhaustive research shedding new light on the ill-starred colony as new information emerged following the discovery of the La Belle in Matagorda Bay in 1995, the last of four vessels that La Salle brought to America. Weddle presents a major revision to the saga of Robert Cavalier de la Salle: daring explorer, empire builder, shaper of history- and shameless schemer who abused his followers and deceived his king. Survivors of the French colony in Spanish-claimed territory misreported even his death as they sought to save themselves. This first European settlement between Florida and Mexico was erroneously called Fort St. Louis. Breaking the narrative into three parts, “ The Price of Glory”, “A New Direction” and “The Lost Colony,” Weddle uses the artifacts and other information from the shipwreck to shed new light on the efforts of La Salle and his men. Historical facts led to the discovery of the shipwreck and the archeological evidence raised new historical questions, which Weddle addresses in his usual competent fashion. College Station, 2001, 1st Ed., 327 Pgs., HB.

CORTES AND THE DOWNFALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE
Author: Jon Manchip White
Price: $16.95

We feature this item again because it one of the best biographies of Hernán Cortés and the history of the conquest of Mexico. It is a veritable gem, well written, and the substance of its contents belies the size and cost of the book. This is a magnificent retelling of Imperial Spain’s epic conquest, offering a fresh and convincing interpretation of Cortés’ crucial role and charts the man’s staggering odyssey through Central America. Cortés has been misunderstood but beyond revealing the character of one man the book examines the extraordinary Aztec leaders, among them Moctezuma, and their rigid warrior state. The author concludes by analyzing the psychological and political effects of the introduction of the Hispanic race into the Americas, a people who continue to enrich the culture and demography of the region today. This is a limited printing and represents the revised second edition of the Laredo Archives Indexes by Brother Wood, Special Collections Director at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Sebron Wilcox found the documents in the basement of the Webb County Courthouse in 1934, possibly saving them from destruction. Mr. Wilcox began to organize the records with the help of Father Andrés of San Agustine Church. Later work, including transcriptions, was continued as a W.P.A. project under Ricardo de la Garza and the work was completed in 1940 by the Historical Records Survey and the Statewide Records Progress. Brother Wood has expertly continued the more recent preservation work of Carmen Perry and Bro. Paul Novosal. The archives belong to the State of Texas but St. Mary's has been designated as the permanent repository. Since the first publication of the Indexes in 1993, six volumes of documents from the archives have been published by Brother Wood. In this edition, in the chronological index, an asterisk in front of the document indicates that it has been published. The complete list of published documents after the chronological index indicates in which volume it appears. San Antonio, 2005 Rev 2nd Ed., 98 Pgs., 8& 1/2 x 14, PB.
